The flood waters have subsided around here for the most part, leaving freshly carved washes, rain ruts and wind blown trails. I thought it would be a good time to see what damage had been done and spend some time finding the condition of local water crossings etc.
The truck was already a bit dirty, why not sample some of it's capabilities and hone some skills at the same time. This wasn't meant to be a "trailer queen" and vowed to never shy away from exploration or use due to the possibility of a little custom "desert pin striping" or filling the cab with red blow sand or the underside with the regions red clay. So, off I went for a look around.
Some of you who have watched the Viral "Flash Flood Video" from a few weeks back will recognize this area as the same eblow in the river bed where all of that was shot. I wandered around at dusk, looking for some good light and a few fun natural obstacles set up in the right spot to capture the setting sun off the surrounding hills.
This thing sure flexes up quite nicely, keeping all four wheels on the ground, even absent a load in the bed and with all the tires fully aired up. It crawled all over in 4-HI. When alone I use 4-Lo, the locking diff feature and reduced air pressures as my several stages of back up, in case I have to "self recover" with no one around. Worst case scenario, there is the Warn 12k winch. But, this truck is so capable, I find myself just getting around everywhere without the need of all those great features. I find myself cycling through the various settings more as a matter of maintaining familiarity with the equipment and keeping things "lubricated" than out of actual need. But, it sure is nice to know that mechanical "safety net" is available when you start getting into things way out here in the sticks. It is a long walk to town. And I HATE to walk .

Beautiful rig and thanks for sharing the pictures.
They are quote capable trucks. I remember one magazine test putting the Raptor up against the Powerwagon and thinking what a ridiculous comparison.
Two different trucks for two different missions.
Love the paint scheme on yours too!!

Why no youtube videos to share? And, although your truck looks capable, there are those who would argue that you need a Toyota to have a real off road vehicle (I read this in a video comment).

Yeah, I saw that Goof's comment on my Coral Dunes Vid as well. I didn't see any Toyota's out where I was.
I still have a soft spot for the Raptor. I have seen a few around town believe it or not, but none out on the trails. It seems by far the weapon of choice out here is the Rubicon Jeep. Perfect environment for it around here, for those outdoorsy types hitting the Parks, doing some hiking and camping in the back country. The open air interior, mpg and more compact size are great for these trails.
Absolutely correct about the Raptor vs. Power Wagon. Odd people always try to compare them head to head, but other than being a upgraded factory equipped rig, having four doors, a V-8 and on a truck chassis, they really are apples and oranges.
During the high speed long sections of open unmaintained "roads" out here, I would like to try a Raptor. Being locked up, crawling around, towing or doing more heavy work, the PW is awesome. I consider myself lucky to have stumbled into the one I did, in the color I wanted and at a price I could do. The Raptor seems more "sporty" to me, and I do wish I had been able to have the SunRoof option on this truck. Other than that, and maybe a little bit of 6.2 Blue Oval envy, I have no regrets. I do wish I had a Raptor to try out just to put the whole question to bed once and for all. But, again, I really think the mood and terrain of the day would be the biggest deciding factor. Fun, fast, flashy and spunky in the Raptor, or Tank Crush around in a little more conservative ride in the Power Wagon... a beefed up Half Ton or a Softened Up Three Quarter Ton, who knows.
