2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon
I searched and searched looking for a Manual Trans Wrangler Rubicon. I was convinced I wanted the 6 spd in a two door, with a hard top, in the Anvil Grey, in what used to be called the "Anniversary Edition", which is now just called the "X" as it comes with a few neat looking, higher quality and actually functional bits. On the comfort side, the "X" comes with heated leather seats, then some cosmetic goodies, but more importantly, the functional vented hood, larger rock rails along the underside of the doors and they used to come with a tire upgrade on the Rubicon edition wheels, but in Black, rather than Satin Silver.
Well, after actually finding one, and driving it, back to back, with a "Unlimited" (4 Door) model, and the convincing of my children that the 4-door is the more functional and what transforms the old "Wrangler - Jeep" into a more substantial, modern spacious and better riding vehicle. I was shocked at how well they had managed to keep the spirit and feel -for good, or bad- of the true, original old "Jeep" in the new, modern and upgraded fancy "Jeep" of today. Actually, after a brief ride in the 2 dr "X" model I so craved in photo and print , it turns out it is TOO original, being twitchy, bouncy and having a truck like transmission, as opposed to a tight, light and snickitty manual of a modern sports car that for some reason I had envisioned.
So, long story short, considering it is to be my wife's Daily Driver, and thus subjected to both the extreme environment out here, but also her typical interior upkeep and abuse. Also, instead of having a vehicle I had to worry about, and fuss every time it got dirty or dusty inside or out, and thus ruining the whole spirit and purpose of owning a convertible, why not go with a total "user friendly" low maintenance, wash and wear philosophy. While both saving my mental stress and messing up a "fancy" vehicle, lets just be real and not sweat it. This is why we wanted such a vehicle in the first place! This is the perfect environment for open aired driving, and at the same time, such an extreme environment, both naturally and the way I knew it would be operated, in this place, you don't just check every performance enhancing and protective skid plate style box for the fun of it. You actually NEED it out here. So, we totally switched gears and went with a soft top, Auto, Rubicon with all the off road goodies and strength and self preservation components. We didn't even go with the NAV or any of that, as it would just be something else to worry about with the top down, be it due to the weather, asshats tossing trash into it (yes, I've owned convertibles before!) or theft, etc.
Literally a wash and wear interior and dash, with the Bluetooth and Sat radio being about the only non-off highway enhancing options other than the Auto Trans. Oh, and I did give up a little, by staying with the stock 3.73's in the pumpkins, rather than the optional 4.10s. Again, this would work out to our advantage once again, as it would see most of it's use on-highway with her driving, and would help me gain a little mpg and not be so "frantic" feeling on the highway at high cruise speeds. This, while retaining enough internal gearing leverage in the Rubicon's lower transfer case ratios that it really would be a non-issue anyway, unless really going vertical. Literally.
So, it works out. I don't worry about it, she leaves the top down for the most part, and it gets right around 20-22 on the highway and still flexes, twists and crawls when I get behind the wheel and decide I want to leave the Power Wagon or Samurai at home. It is also user friendly, capable and just the right thing for when she decides to unwind and 'hit the beach' as she often does. The gears, electronic swaybar disconnect and switchable, selectable front and rear lockers, along with it's typical Jeep extremely nice "approach and departure" angles, ground clearance and outstanding articulation are just icing on the cake. Perfect vehicle for it's intended use, in this environment.

Re: 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon
My buddy Rob came out from CA to visit last weekend, along with his RZR800 side by side. In the middle of a crazed Thunderstorm, dropping chilled, Monsoonal Monster sized rain drops, we went out and ran about for it's first real off highway familiarization run. Just to make sure all the systems were functional and to educate myself on how it feels, it's capabilities and to have a little fun. With just a quick little air-down, it performed like magic. Keeping up with the RZR in the high speed sand wash "run from the Thunder" test, and actually flexed and crawled much more smoothly, and proficiently than the RZR could, as it's firm suspension and short wheelbase kept lifting one... sometimes two tires off the ground when things got technical on the slick rock.
We just scuffed the rubber bumper caps on a couple corners of sandstone, dropping into and clawing out of some extreme ravines and just once kissing the belly skid plate on one very extreme drop off a cliff ledge, with an insane break over angle. But, no harm, no foul, despite sounding a bit "gritty" as it glided over the edge as it dropped in.
So, it's all good! It's so far, earned the "Brakelate Seal of Approval" and is a total hoot. I also found the "front half fold-back" option on the soft top to be a awesome, quick, convenient and adequately fun way to get some moon beams (I actually hate running around top down in the daylight, unlike my wife) without all the big muss and fuss of folding the whole top back.

More fun. No tires peeled off the rims, bent or broken tie rods or anything else, believe it or not!

Love those pics!!
I was out in Sedona with my girlfriend recently and should post up some of the pics we took out there out on the trails.
Congrats on the Jeep. They are REALLY fun and there are tons and tons of parts out there to customize them.

Screwed Again!
Nope, it is the stock unit that came of the original motor with the rebuild. Ported one remained on the car.

That looks pretty sweet! I've always had a thing for Wranglers, but never got around to getting one. Congrats on having yet another vehicle to ravage the landscape in! :p

Re: 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon
Hey XJRGuy; Does yours seem to run Hot? Ours seems to really put off some heat when "working" in deep sand or slow, steep climbs especially out here in the Summer Air Temps.
Not sure if it actually has a nice factory needle gauge that really (!) moves, unlike every other dash indicator other than for fuel in the last 20 cars I've owned, but this Temp gauge really does move around and will climb up above half-to three quarters range (not in red, but climbs) but always returns once we get some air flowing through it.
I know the "X" and Anniversary models have cool looking ducted hoods, but perhaps this is a real necessity ? That V-6 sure takes up all the room under the hood, and even the rear exhaust system seems to just about glow after clawing through deep sand, churning along at a walking pace.
Just curious if that was a common theme. I guess I could go do internet research, but oh God no. Not ANOTHER forum board!
