I believe a friend died today -- motorcycle accident

Postby jhwalker » Wed Sep 21, 2016 6:17 pm

He hit a deer 2 days ago, was found by the road not breathing, facts are skimpy. Then had a heart attack in the hospital.
I will share more when I know more. A good guy

Condolences, James. Was it a friend in the US or in Mexico? Deer are such a huge danger to motorists in parts of the US.

Sorry to hear about your friend. I have always stated that deer and dogs (including coyotes) are my biggest fears, as both tend to dart out right in your path, unexpectedly, and both are large enough to put you on the ground. They can even cause deaths for cage drivers, let alone motorcyclists. And, I always think when riding solo, way out in the middle of nowhere, that this may not be prudent as well.

But, some would say that your friend died doing what he enjoyed, and that this is not the worst way to go, by far.

It happened on Olsen Rd in Simi. It turned out that he has not yet died-- they are testing for brain activity. Hard to get info from here. Don't need to know more... Wife, kids. no bueno

Sobering.

Tetge has some video from one of our rides - Ridge Route/Three Points/Gorman Post Road - where we had near misses with a deer.

It was a small deer but it darted out and almost got you. Spooked me as the video showed that I did not even react it happened so suddenly. Brakelate and I were close enough following you that if you went down we might all have crashed. It is about the 14:10 mark in the video.

I rode that same road a couple of weeks ago on the KTM and it was completely deserted, as usual, and I confess that thoughts of deer did enter my mind as the brush comes right up to the road and one can get moving along at a good clip in places. It seems that I have not shaken my memory of that day. Not a good place at all to crash due to lack of traffic and its remote location. It may well be the highest risk road that I ride, all things considered, but, it is also technically interesting and not crowded and I have never once seen a cop. It also features random loose slippery sand and mud in some corners and sometimes slimy leaves in dark damp shaded corners, and other hazards.

And, for those that know him, it was Frank who led one his rides down that road many years ago, and introduced me to it, after he got us there from Calabasas over the Old Ridge Route before it was gated and closed to through traffic. As I recall, Frank was on a B50 with clip on's and still left us all for dead on the basically dirt Old Ridge Route. He then raced down the slippery paved section after the Ridge Route as it was a perfect road as far as crazy Frank was concerned. I managed to complete the ride, frozen at the bars and at a much slower pace.

Coyotes will aim for you. They like to suicide by vehicle. And they will tear up a car, I wouldn't want to hit one on a motorcycle

I knew that I had a screen dump somewhere, and, believe me that the deer got really close to the Honda's front wheel. Brakelate was the only rider that reacted at all, proving once again his mad skills. Deer are a real concern to any motorcyclist. One wonders if the riders that this thread concerns is hanging in still, and if there is any chance of survival?

He is still on life support. No natural functions, no brainwave activity, but I know from another experience how hard it is to pull the plug. His wife is in 'maybe a miracle will occur' mode.
