Diff Service - what would you guys recommend?

Post by SVTRonDogg »

Looking at getting 2 things done to the rear end on my GT500 in the near future:

1. Installing the 2013 GT500 rear brakes, which involves new caliper brackets to accommodate the larger rear rotors, requiring the axles to be pulled out for install.

2. Have the gears 'reinstalled' or adjusted. When I went from factory 3.31s to 3.73s, it really woke up the car. Problem is on decel they are whiney as hell. The shop who installed them wasn't my first choice for gears, and I want to finally get it fixed.

So two questions really.

- What job to do first? I imagine the rear end shop doesn't want to mess with brakes at all, so that means opening the diff cover twice. I'm imagining doing the brakes first, this way the gear shop can seal the cover 'for good' and ensure the axles were reinstalled correct.

- With 40k on the clock, should I consider replacing or rebuilding the factory diff, or just run it till it decides it's had enough?

I know a couple places that will do both here in the SFV.

They did some work on my Jeep.

Pricey but they do very good work.

These guys rebuilt the trans in my classic Lincoln. Guy who owns the shop is very nice and very skilled.

I'll check out TRC as well. I've seen them around for years.

Should I be looking into rebuilding the diff while it's out? Or just slap it back together and call it a day? I'm planning more street use and some standing mile events with this car vs. the drag and road course days it has been getting.

For your future intended use, I would just put it back together. Unless there is some issue with it.

FYI, the LSD in my Termi is still bone stock, after 75k, AND as you know, a lot of abuse.

I guess it could have been seen as "Proper Operation as Intended" ?

If I lined up all my burnout marks back to back that have been performed in that poor car, they would probably circle the globe. At least twice.

And

If I stacked all the used up tires, one on top of another, that I've gone through (or finished off) with the Termi, I could probably stand at the top and count the above mentioned rings.
