If it is true, what do they do with them? Do the manufacturers have recycling plants where they break everything down and recycle the materials for new cars?

I feel like someone must have done the research (production levels vs sales levels) and I would think that this would be an incredible financial burden. I may root around, but am behind of a couple of commitments, so maybe someone else will dig in...
