Virtual GT -- the simulators

I have a friend who has been racing too little due to some work opportunities who has a top end Virtual GT. He is getting ready for a vintage race event, so has the car defined to the simulator, and of course the track is already defined. I plan to get by his car garage next year (East coast) to see if it is as real as he says. He does well in vintage racing with most of his prep time spent in the simulator. It also spares the abuse on the old cars he races. But he is mid-50s now (a young guy) and has always done well with his racing.

That's a pretty cool setup. With the extremely limited on-track testing they're allowed to do, F1 teams rely heavily on simulators. Must be a pretty decent way to learn a track.

He said he will be ready to race. He has run a couple hundred laps simulating the old (pristine) race Jag on the track he will be driving. I have never seen so many settings on a device. Knowing him, and knowing the number of pure race cars that he has, I'd bet he went top end on it.

That sounds pretty amazing. I would imagine, at that level of sophistication, you could enter the specs for any changes you make to your setup (i.e. change in spring rates in your suspension), and it would give you a fair representation of how the programmed vehicle would respond. Technology can be pretty astounding.

I may try to get him to talk about it a little, but he will probably say "get bent, I'm busy".
