Overfilled 5 quart sump by 3.5 quarts

Post by xjrguy »

Whoops.

Total boner move.

Luckily it was a 460 and just shrugged it off.

Noticed oil pressure was pretty low and engine was vibrating a bit (crank hitting oil)

Used a topsider and pulled the excess out. No damage done.

Yikes. What had you thinking it could hold over eight quarts of oil? Not that I haven't done plenty of silly things, but I was just curious. It's always odd filling the new "Hemi" when it wants like seven quarts.

If this makes you feel any better;

TRUE STORY!

A friend's wife was asked to check the fluids on their little Mazda commuter car any time she went long distances. So, she rolls up in Mojave and finds that the water was a bit low. So, she removes the cap and starts filling it with a hose from the station. Filling... filling... filling, and no change in the coolant reservoir. Finally, a bewildered passer-by shouts at her to stop what she is doing! Apparently, she had removed the oil cap from the valve cover and was pouring water directly into the crankcase!!!! :o

So, they towed it home, did like six back to back oil changes after draining about five gallons of water out of the motor, and believe it or not, the little bugger is still out logging miles as if nothing happened several years later. I wonder what sort of scene that would have been if she had tried to start it up with all of that in there.

My new 5.0 holds 8 qt. with a new filter. It tells me when it wants the oil changed. It also eats a little oil, but, some say that it because of the way I drive. Of course that is hogwash. As might be expected, an oil change is a bit expensive since it also uses semi synthetic oil.

I wonder what is the logic behind these newer motors with the increased oil capacity. If that extends service intervals or what

The motor has a wonky oil filter adapter....and I forgot about it.

Did oil change, thought filter was tightened down and started the car. It wasn't due to aforementioned oil filter adapter.

Immediately car dumped my new Rotella T6 all over the street. At this point I am kicking myself because this is the second time I have done this and running back to turn motor off.

Ran inside and dumped cat litter all over the spill.

Proceeded to go get more oil...assumed car had evacuated ALL of the oil in mishap above and put another 5 quarts in.

Drove to Burbank....stopped to drop something off and oil pressure was on L.

Figured out the problem, and drove back home gingerly on freeway and fixed problem today.

I love this car.

Yes definitely to extend the OCI.

European cars have had large sumps for years.

My 4.0L supercharged I-6 Jaguar had an 8.5 quart sump!! Almost as much as my 8.3L V10 powered Viper which was 10 quarts.

Dang! I believe my Ford V-10 in the RV only holds 7.5 or so.

I pulled a worse bonehead move on my Cobra once. I changed the filter and went ahead and added my new Mobil 1 0W-20. Checked my oil... D'OH! I hadn't drained the old oil out. Luckily, I had bought two cases of oil, so I didn't have to make another trip.

As for oil capacities, my work truck's 5.9L Cummins I-6 holds 10 quarts in the pan. The big ass oil filter holds some more.
