I'm just curious on average what mileage do these cars start to break down? And also, what can I do to better take care of these vehicles? Thank you.

Given the fact that these models are well-maintained, I could not see any sort of a mechanical breakdown within the 250,000 mile mark. These machines when serviced religiously and the user delicately treates them can have a prolonged endurance.
On the other hand, when they are not cared for and used in an extreme manner, its life can be shortened by up to 78% of its expected "life". The main culprit to shortening the lifespan of this machine is to keep it running hot and not change the oil.
To better take care of these vehicles...that is easy .. just bring them to their respective repair centers and pay the maintenance fee...The luxury in this luxury car is not assayed by the amount of purchase but the amount of maintenance cost to its user.
Thanks for asking...

It's not just about mileage - it's about age as well. The "last" question may need clarification: it depends on how much money you are willing to dump into them on a regular basis. MB's start bothering you right after the warranty runs out, and expect major problems starting at 60,000 mi or so. They do not deserve their reputation at all.
Yes, the engine in general may last longer than that of a caddy's but "little" things cost an arm and a leg to repair, and are capable of making your life a nightmare. A customer of mine decided to buy an mb - despite all my efforts to talk him out of it - with a busted overflow expansion tank, and was unpleasantly surprised when was forced to pay $650 for a plastic reservoir...
