Each state is different, but typically an officer can't "add up" on a fine just for having a radar detector unless they are strictly forbidden in that locality.

i think it depends on the state you are in. My bro got pulled over for what the cop think was racing/speeding, he was just behind 2 guys he didn't know that was racing, Wong place wrong time. but when he got pulled over the cop didn't care that he had one. I think those are legal in Nevada.

I can clock you going 90 in a 65 but I can chew your butt and write you for going 70. Usually if you're not trying to get yourself killed, I don't really care if you have a radar detector or not.
I write a lot of warnings, depends on the attitude of the driver.

Virginia is one of those states. It doesn't need to be on, just the fact that you have it is enough to convict, and you also run the risk of having the unit confiscated as well, however some people have had thier detectors returned to them when leaving the state, if the fines were paid prior.
To be honest, police officers generally do not care for drivers using equipment to beat them at thier own game.They tend to look at it as a cheap way to cheat the state out of speeding fine revenue, and will enforce that law if they get the opportunity.Best defense: obey the speed laws.
