All,
I will be backing up the forum and reloading the OS on the server.
This will most likely occur tonight (9/15/08) or tomorrow (9/16/08)

Re: ***Possible Board Outage 9/15***
It seems to be snapping right along right now at 14:14 on Thurs. But, who knows with these things? Doesn't this software allow a message when people hit the URL that the site is temporarily down for maintenance?

Hi Tetge,
You bring up a good point and under normal circumstances that would work.
The problem here is that the forum software message (if enabled) would be unreachable regardless if the internet line was down.
Since our internet line was encountering a failed state, nothing on the server was reachable.
I would have had to remap the www address in our DNS management tool to a server not hosted on this internet line with a graphic explaining the problem.
Hopefully this kind of thing will be avoided once the new business grade line is installed tomorrow.
I will have a 4 hour response time if there are any issues now and in the future, vs. the consumer grade line that is "best effort"

Re: ***Possible Board Outage 9/15***
So, you are getting a fat pipe? Over to where I live, out in the desert, our best service is two tin cans with a string stretched between them, and, they tell us we are lucky to have that. I once attempted to upgrade my DSL and they said that they did a line check and that it would work for sure, and then, I ended up with less speed than a modem. Naturally I complained but it then turned out that since the phone company was involved, undoing the upgrade took weeks. Seems that phone service of any sort is not a priority and there is really no recourse as long as the phone company says that they are working on it. Now, although rumors of fiber optic cables in the hood float around, I am scared to even think about any upgrades although it sure would be nice to have some more speed when I am downloading all those Linux distros I keep trying.

Hi,
We have a pretty fat pipe as it is now.
Currently sitting at 10Mbit downstream and 1 Mbit upstream.
Basically without TCP IP overhead about a MEGABYTE per second download and 100+ KILOBYTE per second uploads. Pretty smoking until you start looking at FIOS, etc.
Tomorrow it will be 15Mbit downstream and double the upstream to 2Mbit per second.
The major reason behind upgrading the line other than speed is for the static IP addresses and the business grade response.
With the internet outage we just had forced the board to be down a day, the new SLA for the new service will be guaranteed response in 4 hours.
If there is a problem, within 4 hours there is a truck at the server site.

Must be nice to have that kind of connection. I can only dream. And, in my neighborhood the truck would be jacked in four hours which is why they don't ever come here for service calls. If it can't be done from the central facility, forget it.

When I lived in Burbank, I was 15,000 ft from the DSL switch.
Charter almost refused to connect me, but I asked them to do a survey as the crow flies for wire length.
I just made it, but the speed SUCKED!!!
Rode out my contract for a year, and then went with a Cable Modem. It was literally 200 times faster.
When I moved back in 2005 again I subscribed to cable and it was even faster over in the market/area I am in now.
Since I am in the industry (IT) every speed advantage is welcomed.
Don't even look up FIOS if you are in an area with just dial up.
FIOS even makes me drool.
Oh and to really get depressed, look at other nation's highspeed speeds and rates. Downright makes the US look prehistoric.
