The Lamborghini Countach LP500 (Longitudinal Posterior 5 Litre) appeared for the first time in March 1971 at the Geneva show. The car probably received its name before the show when someone at Bertone’s Grugliasco plant saw it and exclaimed “Countach†(pronounced “COON-tahsh†or “CUN-touchâ€, Italians use both pronunciations). The expression is from a local Piemontese dialect that seems difficult to translate without offending someone. It is the sort of thing a northern Italian male might say to express appreciation of a particularly attractive female.

gallardo means valiant or brave, murcielago means bat and was also the name of a legendary bull, diablo means the devil and countach doesn't really mean anything but it was a local dialect expression for "Cor! , wow!, look at that!".

Gallarado and Murcealago are different types of bull, Diablo means the devil and countach means...err... never mind.

--The word Countach (inroduced in 1971) is an exclamation in the local dialect of piedmonese, generally used when men see very attracrive women and apparently translates to "Holy s**t!". The name stuck when Nuccio Bertone (a famous car desinger and constructor) first saw "project 112".
--The name Doablo is simply the Spanish word for "Devil".
--The name Murciélago comes from a bull that survived 24 sword strokes in an 1879 fight at the arena of Cordoba, and fought with such passion and spirit that the matador chose to spare its life, a rare honor. Ferruccio wasn't a supporter of bullfighing but was born under the sign of Taurus and so named the majority of his cars after famous bulls or bull breeds.
--The Gallardo model is named after a famous breed of fighting bull and is also Spanish for "gallant".
