I watched a bit of the Master's this year, and, although I have no use for golf, it was easy to get a bit hooked due to the beauty of the course. Trees and flowers and water and bridges and everything green and perfect.
This afternoon, I decided to take a peek at the US Open and I was amazed to find that it was being played on what appeared to be a former military bombing range and that no only were there no trees, but the sand traps were gray, and there was little green. In fact, the surface appeared to be almost a lumpy carpet such as might be found at a run down miniature golf course. In close ups the ball could be seen bouncing on putts. Furthermore, the carpet like surface was so hard that balls ran miles before stopping.
It is also strange that when the camera panned out it seemed to show trees and very scenic looking vistas almost anywhere but the golf course, itself. I also spotted some round holes here and there that may have been volcanic vents for all I know. I watched for awhile, but, no knowing or appreciating the game, the lack of beauty of the course, finally caused me to change to a re-run of some B movie on Turner Classic Movies. The golf was so bad, that there were few commercial breaks, which, I assume, was because no one wanted to buy commercial time.
And, yes, I do realize that the British Open is played on nasty courses, and perhaps the US Open is in that vain, but, I prefer Pebble Beach and other places as they are interesting to look at from a spectator point of view.
I also missed seeing Tiger as it seems that he was so bad that they didn't even show him.

Confession time -- with NOTHING to watch, I am watching women's soccer. Japan Netherlands. Not a cute chick on the field. Last night USA vs ?Columbia? About 1/2 of the US women could kick my ass easily I think.
