Terri and I followed Jordan Farmar's basketball years at Taft, then his brief time at UCLA, the Lakers, the Nets, over to Europe, and now back to the Lakers. He gave up a big contract to come back to a small contract with the Lakers, because, he said, he realized while playing in Turkey that he really all along wanted to play for the Lakers and was willing to take the initial pay cut to try to make it here.
His game might not be good enough for the pros, but there was an article about something else that he did that I think is worth noting in this period where most folks in the public seem to be pretty self-absorbed.

Poor kid. 26 years old and forced to come back for the tiny salary of $1.1 million a year. It turns out that they pay guys who perhaps can not play in the NBA pretty well, by some standards. Not that it matters, since the Lakers got nothing as the Clippers are due to win the championship this year for sure.

But the point is that he wasn't forced. He could have played in the other league for a ton more money, but wanted to take the chance of finding a good place on the Lakers. Farmar will, I believe, do fine after basketball. He was an honors student in basketball and seems to have kept his balance.Tetge wrote:Poor kid. 26 years old and forced to come back for the tiny salary of $1.1 million a year. But the real point is that he helped the other guy. I love those kind of stories.
