Flash Floods

Post by Brakelate »

We have had a couple of incidents here in the last two weeks that brought the power of these flash floods to the attention of the media. In particular, the big Greyhound sized tour bus headed back from the Grand Canyon that was suddenly broadsided by a flash flood and washed several hundred yards down stream. Luckily, no one was injured. But the $600,000 bus that was about a year old, was totaled.

Being a "City" kid, these things are the stuff of rumor and legend, more spoke of around the camp fire, or in an old western movie. Well, I got to experience one myself recently and can say this it is a truly amazing sight. Not just sight, but the sound of the heavy debris churning past, and the smell. After about an hour, the previously dry wash, was dry once again. But what a powerful event to be able to witness and stand so close to.

I found this video, put out by a guy here in town. Most of these clips were filmed within a mile or two of the house, as I can recognize the locations. Heck, I may have a new hobby to get in to! About time I go introduce myself and have him show me the good spots to view this activity.

Seems like a slow moving monster, but I sure wouldn't want to trip and fall in front of this thing!

Wow, that's some crazy stuff! When it starts out, it looks so slow. I can see how it can lull you into a false sense of security just before sweeping you away. Stay safe out there, my Ninja!

Incredible!!

That was a great video....I have never seen anything like that.

I've been 4x4ing in a bunch of washes all over SoCal.

Can't imagine anyone being dumb enough to camp out in a wash and have this happen at night when they are sleeping.

Also another crazy place to see water out in the desert is Afton Canyon and the Mojave River. It flows underground and comes above ground near Afton.

It's a trip.

That was cool, but, it sort of reminded me of that time I ate Mexican (in Mexico) food. Still, I guess that all the stories I was told about flash floods were for real. Does that water eventfully go into Lake Powell?
