We have officially seen all eight of films nominated for Best Film. Here's my take on each:

A Star is Born - Pretty good. A slightly different take on a cheesy romance movie. I wasn't feeling the chemistry between the leads. They seemed more like just friends than romantic partners. Lady G has had too work on her face for the roll (a fresh-faced new singer). Probably shouldn't be nominated for this award.

Black Panther - Loved it as a comic book genre nerd. One of the upper middle of the crop of Marvel Comic Universe films. BUT, not a best film nominee.

BlacKKKlansman - Very interesting story, decent acting, and some powerful real footage used. It was not bad, but not great.

Bohemian Rhapsody - Entertaining look inside the creation and existence of Queen, an interesting glimpse of Freddie Mercury. If you know their music, you will be entertained. Weak contender for the win, IMHO.

The Favourite - Interesting and pretty shots throughout, great acting, good score (though some pieces seemed out of place in this film), but overall MEH.

Green Book - Great story based on real people, great acting, and very entertaining and heartfelt. My pick for the win.

Roma - I've already reviewed this borefest in this thread. It's sure to win at least one or two awards, but it should not really be in contention for Best Film.

Vice - Entertaining, especially considering the main character being portrayed. Great acting, and well written. A very interesting look behind the curtain of American politics. A few takeaways, F*CK Dick Cheney, F*CK the war in Iraq, and F*CK the GOP. This was probably 3rd favorite movie on this list, but probably my 2nd choice for the win.

From looking at this list, my thinking is that the Academy is trying to please everybody. There's a wide array of films covering different genres, and it just seems like they tried to pick the best representative from each. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing, but it doesn't quite feel right to me.

Called it! Though, I guess it's getting lots of hate for winning. Some people are mad because it was the "safe" pick. Others, including the family of the person the film was based on, don't like how he was depicted. Apparently, the artist being portrayed never wanted any part of a film being made about him, and neither did his family. The son of the driver portrayed in the film had tried to convince him since the 80s. Well, the artist died 5 years ago, and all of a sudden, he said he had agreed to it. The family says the portrayal is quite skewed. Oh well. It was still an interesting story, though not 100% accurate, and it was by far the best film in the group. Not that there wasn't a better film released in 2018. I'm sure there was.
