Lockwood Valley is a Crappy Road

SoCal BSA Frazier Park ride, Sunday.
On the way up there, we saw 6 forlorn souls being clipped for $4 or $5 hundred by CHP.

At the start, I thought I saw Thruxton71 coming the other way on the MAC as we headed out of the Flying J.

On a straight away, looked down at my mirror to check on my partner, looked up just in time to see a rock . . . .

Lockwood Valley is indeed a crappy road. Narrow, sandy, rock strewn, nasty dipping corners with off camber bits thrown in, and who know what critters are lurking around waiting to leap out in front of you? Lots of traffic and some patrol as well.

There were rumors of a group heading out from Ojai to ambush the BSA parade, so, you might have seen a 1952 Velocette MAC, although I am not sure about that. If so, imagine how interesting it must be to ride a rigid with 1952 forks on Lockwood? And, in spite of a claimed 17 HP, and substantial all up weight, the old Velocette, still can get up to an arrest me top speed that, in spite of denials, has been observed at close to the ton.

I guess that I should once again be impressed by the bike handling skills of a known speedy mug, as a dent that big in a fine cheater light alloy rim, could well have taken out the front end, quicker than a wink, with no advance warning, and deposited the bike and rider on the pavement. I suppose that a tube tire might have been advantageous, but, the fast guys sure do have their moments, as I still remember the deer that tried to take down the Honda 1000. What do they say about better lucky than good?

We were late to the party at circle J, you were leaving as we approached, having stopped for breakfast in Frazier park. We came in on Lockwood Valley road, and from my experience, it was like a super highway, very little debris, hardly any dirt on the road, and no gravel sections. How the H*** did you do that to your nice rim?? Was that a Dunlop?? They are heavy duty..but you can get them straightened.

I was on my trusty Daytona, we ran the route in reverse, up to Pine Mountain and down Hudson Ranch road.. it is a great descent. We stopped at the Place for some pie, as I am not a big fan of the farm.

Really...lockwood was in the best shape I have seen it in years.. as for CHP, none to see in any direction..you must have been traveling in the alternate universe I have been hearing about..

Who straightens them?

Yes, Lockwood was cleaner than usual; this was a rockfall near the summit, just bad juju, checking on Kelly and Laura who were pushing me, a moment's eye off the road.

All LEOs seen were on the 5. Not wanting to chance them, Kelly and I went home by Post Road, 138, Templin, 3 Points, Pine Valley (or is it Pine Mtn?), Elizabeth, San Fran, Spunky, Boquet . . . . .

I would start by checking with Buchanans:

They claim they fix rims... Also, and my memory fails.. they are wheelwrights that provide
services for the horse carriage crowd that can straighten rims.. But that would require
some deep research. There are DYI videos on YouTube, but I don't know about taking
that on with a rim you cannot replace easily.

If buchanans doesn't pan out, let me know and I will ask around with my crew. One guy
is asshole deep in the Vincent crowd, who all want stock alloy dunlops on their rides. He
does a lot of servicing for these clowns.

You must have hit the only rock on the road, and when you say you were being
pushed, I am guessing your pace was hot. Just saying.
