New project from the Dark Side

Post by SonicVenum »

I've been wanting a pick-up truck for a while, just for times where I might need one. I browsed craigslist and eBay for a while, and ended up finding a decent truck for a relatively low price. It was on eBay, and I was able to snipe it with 5 seconds left. So, now I am the proud owner of a 1977 Chevy C20 Custom Deluxe, 5.7L, long bed. The truck is a California truck that spent some time in Oregon (I think), but has been in California most its life. The ad said it had some "surface rust", which was a less than honest statement. There's a few rust spots that will need repair, but it's all manageable. The truck runs great, but I didn't find out until the day after I brought it home that it didn't like starting cold. I did some research, and discovered the Quadrajet carbs on these trucks have a tendency to develop leaky fuel well plugs. So, I bought the appropriate parts and a rebuild kit, and took it apart. I replaced the well plugs, but the rest of the carb parts were in great shape. I also replaced the seat belts because the driver side belt was in rough shape, and it was a pain to get it pulled out to put it on.

Long term plans are to get all the gauges working (fuel level, volt meter, and temp don't work), swap worn out interior parts (dash, door panels) for black replacements, add a/c, upgrade the stereo to something with Bluetooth and USB inputs, and paint it. It's been fun, so far.

Nice score.

Love the long bed, especially with long bed shell. Having a beater truck is SO handy.

Thanks! Hopefully, it'll only be a beater for a little while. I want to make it as nice as I can make it in my garage.

When you have a nice truck you don't want to scratch it. That's why I have a nice one and not so nice one when I really should have just one. If only I could  clearly

The nice thing is the bed of this truck is already coated in Rhino liner, and it's a pretty good shape, so I won't need to touch that. I should be able to use it for pretty much anything I need, even if I have to take off the camper, without messing up the eventual paint. If I absolutely need to do something that may scratch it, I'll rent one or go grab one of our company trucks. :-D

I miss having a truck. Don't need one, just miss having one. You can pick up a beater here for not much, but a Central Mexico beater gives a new meaning to 'beaten'.
