Post Monsoonal exlporation

Post by Brakelate »

Took the Samurai out to inspect the local trails and canyons once this seasons record setting flash flood run off had passed through.

With it's 30x11.50-15 TSL Bias Ply Super Swampers, spring over axle lift, locked rear pumpin gears, reduced transfer case crawl ratios and Power coming from a fresh 1.6L 8-Valve Sidekick transplant spiced up with a long tube header and brand new Holley Progressive carb it should have no problem getting itself out of any potential trouble it might find its sway into. Approach and Departure angles are incredible, and there is enough height and underbody structural protection to keep it going through all but the worst of conditions. Though equipped with a full cage and rocker bar to s sprinkled with more than enough sturdy recovery points, this little bugger hasn't been on receiving end of a tow rope or chain in years.

That was about to change.

While roaming about on one of the many trails near the house, we discovered that what had been rain grooves of a few inches deep, had grown to be 12" to 18" in width and depth. While running one of our regular routes headed West with the setting sun low in our eyes we crossed many such ruts criss crossing the trail. Finally we rolled up to what appeared to be a slightly larger than average rain wash . Not too concerned with what we have yet encountered and being armed with the confidence of skill and our machine, we rolled right into the next one..,
Only to be stopped dead in our tracks quite abruptly when we dropped into a Four foot hole with vertical walls as tall as the Samurai's hood and both too steep and lacking proper traction to attempt self-extrication.

It is always nice to have such trails close to home, a cell phone, and a wife on the other end of the line in possession of a "real" truck, which just also happens to be packing some serious recovery gear, including a wonderful 12k Warn Winch.

In no time help had arrived, and the little Zuk was freed from it's trap and back on it's way. It was even nice to get the Ram out in the brush, to lock it up and exercise it's handy Winch.

All in all, another good afternoon in the soft moist Utah sand. :banana-dreads:

No sweat at all for the Ram. It was happy for a field trip. Sammi popped right out without damage and went on it's merry way.

I will post the rest of the journey tomorrow.

With all the work mixing and matching various suspension components, the little bugger has amazing articulation and can demonstrate some very impressive distances of full droop and when completely stuffed under compression without rubbing or complaint.

We were off to discover some very unique terrain and amazing views following the storm that had just rolled through.

Soft loamy earth. Rather pillowy to walk on. You sink six inches with every step. They will probably dry and remain for another thousand years.

All around are sea shells, petrified plant life, trees and groups of very well defined and complete snail shells.

The ravines around the powder coal mounds, and then the once again crossable "dry" creek that was filled with 200 yards of raging flash flood water and debris only 20 minutes prior.

Wow, that's absolutely gorgeous! You should start up your own "Suzuki Adventure Tours" business up there! :!:

Love the story and the pics. That is quite the "stuck" you got yourself into.

Luckily you had good backup with your wife and the truck.

What part of Utah is that? I am headed out to Saint George next month and hope to check some of the local trails out.

Thanks for posting that!

Yeah really, it worked for Nina Barlow in Sedona. She has quite the Jeep business out there.

This is just West of Page / Big Water off 89. There are all sorts of neat spots right around Kanab, UT.

What are you planning on bringing out to St. George? I would love to meet up with you and can show you some really neat spots, with easy to difficult level trails just East of St. George. Give me Five hours, or a shorter afternoon time block and we could have a great time! Plus, it would be nice to finally meet the Mystery Man!

Bring any of your Jeeps, or if you are in a rental car, I would be happy to even pick you up over in Kanab and we could cruise around and have a great BBQ lunch, then see the sights in the Power Wagon. I got plenty of room and I am not afraid to get it dirty! The Coral Pink Dunes are right outside of Kanab (our own 1904Kid may be out there camping during that period) and the Hoodoo Rocks, old film sites and the Cowboy Inscription Rock Canyon from the late 1800's is not too far down the road as well.

Let me know! ;)

All I will say is that the pictures don't do reality justice. I liked that drop-off, Jay!
