I changed up and hit Best Buy to see if they had any kind of reasonably priced SSD's because I wanted to get some better performance out of my secondary computer, and SSD's rock. Best Buy is not nearly as large as Wal*Mart, but, they are about the only game locally for getting a hard drive. I still got a workout, because they have the SSD's and other HD's in the back of the store, but there is a big display toward the front of the store that says that it is the hard drive center. So, I had to run down an elusive worker to get directions to the SSD's. Naturally, they did not have the SSD that the internet said was in stock, and, I was going to give up when, a bit away from where all the SSD's were displayed, up on a high shelf, labeled, closeout, amongst a bunch of other stuff, there was a 128 GB Toshiba SSD for $93. So, I snapped it up, and, after working for 4 hours (at least), I finally got it to work. I work on computers in exactly the same fashion that 100,000 chimps, typing for hundreds of years, would create Shakespeare. So, ultimately, after much wasted effort, I finally figured out how to replace my old C: drive with the cloned to the SSD, new, C: drive. There were strange things happening in my old secondary computer since I had neglected it for years, but, really, the installation instructions for the bare SSD were deficient. But, fooling with the computer was, strangely, also exercise. I had to run out to the hot garage a number of times for tools and machine work (those SSD's are an odd size when using standard HD bays). I suppose that there are better hobbies out there, but, my Windows Experience Index went up from 5.9 to 6.9 as the old HD was the lowest performing component. The lowest performing thing now is my GeForce 8800 GTX, 768 MB, video card, with the aftermarket giant cooler. When I got this card, many years ago, it cost a bundle and it was a killer card. Now, it is the lower limit for my Windows Experience Index. But, that is why it ended up in the secondary, used parts, backup computer, since it was churned out by progress. But, at least with my computer hobby, I do not use up drive train parts and tires. And, if I get bored, I can just get some software or hardware and completely pooch my computer and then spend endless time trying to repair it. I have faith in the chimps too, and, I know that sooner or later they will turn out all the classics.SonicVenum wrote:No working out because I've been lazy. On a day where I work in the field, I get plenty of walking in as I set up, monitor, and pick up our lane closure(s). I get more walking in helping our clients with whatever I can. On days I work from home doing administrative stuff, I don't get much walking in at all. Just up and down a flight of stairs a bunch of times to get food and water throughout the day.
Pat, I occasionally visit my local Wal-Mart, so I know what you're talking about.
And, since I posted this junk here, I will add that I just spent another chunk of time fixing the SSD since the lousy cloning program (called NTI Echo) that I downloaded from Toshiba, installed a partition that extended beyond the end of disk! The program alleged that it would resize to fit, but, apparently it needed a brake job and could not stop. Strangely, Windows, still booted, but no disk programs, such as GParted, and also Norton Ghost, could see the HD as it was not right. So, I had to figure out the problem and fix that too. Now I know that there is a good disk info program included with Ghost which did a test and told me the problem, so, I learned something. And, I fixed the problem easily by shrinking the Windows partition (in Windows) and then resizing it back to the allowable max using GParted from a live Linux USB. Now, where did I leave that Tanquerey bottle since this episode of computer madness has made me thirsty.
