GT500 Recaros - before and after

GT500 Recaros - before and after

Postby SVTRonDogg » Tue May 17, 2016 6:57 am

One part seriously lacking in my Shelby was the stock seats. The bolsters were pretty mellow and the black vinyl made for a slippery surface compared to the Terminator with Alcantara inserts and adjustable upper/lower bolsters.

I had been lusting over the Recaros that started coming in the newer Mustangs (2011+ ?) and finally got my hands on an OEM Ford set. As these seats all have airbags, it's a bit tricky replacing them year to year, and the aftermarket options are none unless you want to defeat the side airbags. I had this set recovered in my own custom blend and the passenger sensors reworked to maintain all safety gear. Night and day difference in look and feel.

   Well done, Ron. I like the rear seat delete. Maybe you have time to do a "my car" report and remind us of all the cool stuff have done. If you do, I will do an update on the SPF covering the mods on it, then maybe Tetge can fill us in on his stealth mods to his 'stock' car. :-D
By golly we can turn this back into a car site   Who else has been playing?

I'm game for that, I feel like any of the car stuff I post just goes by the wayside in here.

But it also helps me remember things if I document it all in a post. :-D

There may not be many of us, but we enjoy it! Also, those like me that don't have a "fun" car right now have to live vicariously through those that do.

I read all of your posts, like Juan. And I'm sure there are others.

Juan is correct as we are all car ( and, for some, motorcycles, as well) guys at heart. Personally, I can only look on from a distance, as I am no longer worthy, driving a grocery getter, and all, but knowing something about the poster and their vehicle history adds to the post. So, the audience is very small, but it is knowledgeable.

In other news, I dropped by Carlos' shop a couple of weeks ago as I was cross town. Easy to find, although he moved to bigger quarters in the same industrial complex, as one only has to look for lots of Lincoln Marks and some Mustangs. Inside the shop were his Terminator, now in the process of being fitted with a stick axle and no longer street licensed. Carlos is going to use the Terminator strictly for mile type roll races, such as the Mojave Mile. There was no talk of nitro in his fuel, but, now the mad scientist can fully tweak his engine to get some performance out of his aero handicapped little Ford. For the track he has what appears to be a tube frame NASCAR truck.
Unfortunately, Carlos refuses to post on this site due to the fact that it uses a different forum software than common, and he is not into any computers that don't make more HP for his race cars.

In some ways, Carlos, has accepted the facts that I too am faced with, that in the modern connected world, freedoms to race around on the street with some impunity are currently significantly more limited than they were almost 15 years ago when some of us were getting new 2003 SVT Cobras and hitting the streets and strips. The double yellow no passing line painter machines have been running full time since then, closely followed by lowered speed limits, such as 45 mph in the middle of nowhere on the ACH, and then, signs that say "radar enforced" and "traffic fines doubled (for you)". And there are also times when max enforcement sends crews out to popular routes to do nothing but beat down the mugs and send a message. Not that the mugs should be shielded, but, max enforcement also makes no distinction between an experienced rider/driver, and someone who needs to have a stern wake up call.

In any case, the real, NHRA type, 1/4 mile tracks in So Cal are gone, other than Famoso, which likes to host BIG events and is not always rewarding for a time runner. At least one gets a genuine time slip from Famoso, and, I would like to go there again, but, why take my grocery getter there and subject it to mechanical abuse and also be prey to any SS Camaro, or Mustang? Only way to run Famoso is on DR's and with some HP.

As for the seats? They are too clean and perfect to sit on, but, then again, the car is also too perfect and clean to drive. However, I am sure that it sounds great as well, and that it has some acceleration to back up the looks. If I were max enforcement, I'd have a field day with that car, after I cuffed and arrested the driver. But, then again, envy is a cruel mistress, and, I am not max enforcement.

It could be old age or a sign of the times, but I have gotten a lot more paranoid driving them around. At least the Cobra, which is less CA compliant. Although I have always been in the city where everything is pretty compact and LEOs are everywhere, vs. some of you living where it was a little more spread out up north.

I have been emailing Carlos a bit lately, sounds like he has been taking some FrankenLincoln to the 1/8 mile at Irwindale on the occasional Thursday night. I need to catch up with him one of these nights out there and pick his brain for my next project. Looks like that 2V donor is a go. I'm planning a Lincoln/Cobra 4V swap into it with a load of suspension goodies to be my new open track ride. The other 2 will further devolve into garage queen status. :(
