Terminator open track setup - Ported Eaton or Whipple 2.3L

Post by SVTRonDogg »

Been sitting on this Whipple for almost a year now. Deciding whether I want to bother with the install or get my hands on a ported Eaton M112. I know Eatons are notorious for running hot, but my 2.8 upper/stock lower setup held up pretty good at Willow Springs. Carlos' heat extractor hood should only benefit it further.

I'm looking for a little more juice without the heat issues. I'd love to go to the Eaton TVS but no EGR = no go for me. I've read that the 2.3L Whipples like to run hot as well, and the larger pulley setups sacrifice torque on the low end.

Any feedback? I haven't talked to Carlos so I'm not sure how his setup has been working out with the 2.3L. He should probably come around and POST.

I also have this kit waiting to go in: http://www.cobraengineering.net/IC%20adapter.html

That should open up the flow in and out of the intercooler as well. I plan to replumb all the lines from the intercooler/heat exchanger/pump eventually.

I would think the Whipple would be the way to go. You may lose a little tq, but you'll still have plenty to spare, and you'll make more HP on less boost, and less heat.

What Hp / Tq levels are you aiming for? My port job was so good that it actually ran a lot less PSI than I had expected, and thus runs quite cool. And you know me- I run a completely stock cooling system for both air & water (I don't even have the passenger head plumbed!)

If I had just a little more headroom on the fuel supply, I would try a lower pulley kit just to see what I have been leaving on the table.

Point being, a good port, with all the supporting mods and cooling tricks your car has, I don't see how you would be disappointed, unless you were trying to run all day up in the 600Rwhp level.

But yes, Diablito is the mad scientist when it comes to these things specifically, and even he has cooling issues at times (as well as the occasional reliability issues due to all the extra various plumbing connections, pumps and second and third hand radiators, intercoolers and God knows what else). I too wish he would come around. :|

I'm shooting for just north of 500rwhp with reliability and consistency. I have decided the GT500 will be the 650rwhp big power standing mile and cruising machine.

My original goal with the Whipple install was to make more power with cooler downstream temps. The car as it sits has a lot of potential left in it with a more aggressive setup and driver. I've been beyond pleased with how it has been performing with the setup it has now. A lot is still on the table as far as stickier tires and more aggressive pads go as well.

I have a Fore hat, twin Ford GT pumps, and Dual FPDM setup waiting as well for the blower swap. Never been a fan of Boost A Pump setups.

My other headache has been the SMOG train. It has been a pain in the arse getting it done with Bassani mids and catted Xpipe. Recently I had a stock pipe modded to fit this setup to blow cleaner. I am also planning on swapping the Paul's HP cold air to the K&N FIPK both for the sake of a CARB # under the hood.

Hmmmm. I'm right at 500/500, and you've seen it run well in the heat for extended periods. But, I baby the thing.

Just register it out at my place, and build the biggest, baddest, custom MotherFather you want! They literally tossed me a plate and never even looked at anything!

Worker at the Utah BMV notices 3 dozen mustangs registered at the same address. Hmmm, I wonder what this is all about?

I might just port the old Eaton and paint it black.
