The way I remember it, he asked for money twice, not once. We expected that the second time would be like the first. That did not happen

So, over the entirety of the life of the site, it was not "Free". I even remember Dave making a comment about how much I contributed the first time as he felt maybe I had overdone it

Anybody offers me something in exchange for money should not renege. I have a long memory for those things

I may have had use of the site at a discount, but certainly not "Free". I think at a minimum, I paid for the opinion I now hold. I will not be labeled some kind of freeloader as it seems to have been implied

I don't get the "two camps" talk. We all were hurt equally. Some have moved on, some have not. If that is the two camps, then I DO get it.

Money? I donated when asked, and donated some more behind the scenes. I take all of my donations divided by my gross income during the years I used the site and the result is .0000 -- yes, not free, but .0000 . I spent more on drinks at the car event in San Marcos last week than I donated in total to Richard over the years.

The real loss was what we all put into the site. A group of diverse guys were committed to Terminators and other cars and SoCalT and linked by that commitment. I had over 35,000 posts and I don't remember whether I was even in the top 5. We had a very special recorded history of a special time in Ford history and our lives, near-contemporaneous recordings of fun events, time slips, incoherent rambles. That for me is what was lost. And we all hate that we lost it, and the fact that we thought we had "saved" it at the very end made the hurt greater.

For sure, I don't think that beating on a guy (Richard) who was having a very bad time in his life is the right path, but different strokes for different folks.

I consider it a blessing that my brain just doesn't work that way.

Anyone's financial loss is relatively nothing compared to what we all really lost. But I am moving on... (one more time)

I think how you pick up the pieces and deal with the aftermath proves your character. Sticking your head in the sand is a perfectly average human response. I put my faith in those who go above and beyond under the worst circumstances, and hope that by goading those on the borderline into doing better they do in fact do better

Business setbacks are part of business. I have been there on days when the payroll went from over 400 to 30 something. It was what happened in the days after that where the stars were born, and the losers cast aside. That is the nature of a free market

We have a division where I work that deals with new customer implementations. They have greatly improved that aspect of the business. I recently sat down with them and implored them to also develop plans for disengaging with customers. A lot of your reputation can be built on how you handle this aspect of a business relationship. If you lose a customer, you want them saying nice things about how it ended. It goes a long way toward your next sale. Ultimately, those businesses are made up of people who form their opinions about the people in the partner company. They move on, and carry their opinions with them. Where they end up, you want them to fall on the side of recommend if it comes to another opportunity. Leave a bad taste in the mouths of those people and you lose as many opportunities as the number of companies they end up at

I agree. For businesses. At my last real job we went from 2000 employees to 200 and back to 2000, and the new version was highly profitable, which is why I was able to step away at age 60. Almost 11 years ago (time flies!)

Of course SoCalT was not a business for Richard. A business would have had revenue. But he did have a real business that he chose not to continue. Maybe he has found his niche with what he is doing now. I wouldn't know because after getting the final message regarding the backups not being available I moved on.

Yeah, problem is, he is slow to settle back down. Now, he's over machine-gunning me in my motorcycle thread for suggesting a bike a mere mortal would enjoy playing around on. I made the mistake of taking into account his years of flat tracking experience and intoxicated street racing back in the day when he was known as the "Madman of Broward County" aboard a 125 Ducati Single.


Had he posted a picture of his infamous metal flat tracking boot, perhaps it would have been etched in my memory.
Clearly I did not mean to insult a legend. It is just so difficult to track and maintain respect, as so many of our members here have such incredible, legendary accomplishments that sweep a broad swath across the face of motorsports and professional love making that one's brain has such a hard time keeping track of it all.

But, I digress.

When someone around here says something, they MEAN it. And without question, they are capable of backing it up, through deed or documentation.

It is tough being a common man, walking the halls of the castle whilst so many immortals feast in the courtyard upon the supple breasts of the nubile groupies who throw themselves at the feet of such greatness.
